To query, type what you want to find in the appropriate box. For example, if you want to find books by anyone named John, type "John" in the criterion box for Author, and choose "contains" for the type of match you want.

You can enter criteria for more than one field. For example, you could ask for all SF books that I have rated an 8 or higher...which would, incidentally, yield a list of SF books I'd probably recommend reading. You can get as silly as you like--you could ask for all authors whose names do not contain an E, for example. (There are quite a few. I've tried it.)
